Go Outside

As I have gotten older and progressed in my career, I have gained a new appreciation for being in nature. There is something so special about disconnecting from everything and immersing myself in some form of nature—whether that be going to the beach (I know I’m spoiled with this), walking in a park, or simply sitting out on the patio—where I feel a true sense of presence in the moment.

We live in a society where everything moves at such a fast pace. I started to notice that I was always chasing something, whether it was a goal or a simple task like figuring out what to make for dinner. My mind was constantly wired to move on to the next thing on my never-ending list. One of my biggest goals for 2025 has been to be more present and embrace stillness in the moment. As someone who is always thinking about a million different things, this has been a challenge.

Luckily, as a lifelong nature enthusiast, I’ve found that being present comes much more easily when I’m outdoors. When you spend time outside, you develop a profound sense of presence—becoming attuned to all of your senses, whether it’s spotting a Blue Heron searching for its lunch, smelling the crisp air and pine flatwoods, or feeling the warm rays of the sun. Lately, I’ve been taking daily walks at one of my favorite local nature trails—Red Bug Slough Preserve—a beautiful 72-acre estuary teeming with native Florida wildlife. I’m fortunate to experience daily encounters with stunning wildlife, including alligators, Great Blue Herons, Wood Storks, Red-Bellied Cooters, and Alligator Snapping Turtles.

With all of this in mind, as I’ve spent more time maintaining this daily practice, I’ve found myself feeling increasingly present throughout each day. This shift has led me to think less about the future and instead embrace the only moment that truly exists—the present.

Exploring New Hobbies

When you are not working or tied to other obligations and responsibilities, how do you spend your time? From my personal experiences, I have found that pursuing and dedicating time to hobbies or personal interests has a wide array of benefits. These include challenging or pushing yourself to new levels, meeting new people (which, in my experience, has led to great friendships), improving consistency, continued learning, and more.

In addition to all these benefits, something I truly love about dedicating time to hobbies is the simple pleasure of having something to look forward to. Hobbies bring joy to my life. This year, after moving back to my home state of Florida and reconnecting with family and friends, I have dedicated the most time to playing tennis and golf. While tennis has been something I have loved and played since I was young, golf was a new pursuit—something that stemmed from the persistence and convincing of my two older brothers. Had I not succumbed to their peer pressure, I might never have known how much I love the challenge of playing golf and learning all the intricacies and nuances of the game.

Nowadays, I find myself always looking for new hobbies to pursue or dedicating time to existing ones, which lately include reading more and fishing (not a bad place to fish either!). Sometimes, hobbies do not always stick. This is okay! I had the idea of learning to play the keyboard this year and bought a refurbished Yamaha keyboard based on a recommendation from my brother Isaiah. However, I haven’t made much progress because I found it doesn’t ignite much passion in me. This could definitely be a result of not dedicating enough time or not taking the right approach. I haven’t given up on it completely and will revisit it at some point. This ties back to the notion that you won’t always love every new hobby you try. But you will only know if you like it—or love it—if you try it.

An important facet of hobbies is that they are not a one-size-fits-all deal. Some hobbies are a better fit for certain people, and some individuals might excel at something that others might not. I also think it’s important to research the barriers to entry or the learning curve of the hobby you are pursuing. For example, if you want to learn to fly a plane, don’t expect to be able to do it in a week. Do your due diligence so you have realistic expectations and understand what you are getting into.

In my case, I learned this lesson with golf (the hard way). I went into it thinking I would be great because I have always been athletic and typically excel in sports I try. Golf quickly humbled me. After some lessons from the school of hard knocks, I realized it takes time to be “good” at golf. Once I accepted this, the game became much more enjoyable. I gained respect for the process and appreciated those really nice shots or shooting a personal best.

With all that being said, I encourage everyone in my life—whether it’s my partner, family, friends, or even random people I talk to in the grocery store—to try and pursue hobbies. Doing so can have tremendous benefits for personal development and overall mental well-being.

Eliminate Your Distractions

“You can always find a distraction if you are looking for one” – Tom Kite

This quote deeply resonated with me because it feels profoundly true, especially in today’s world. Nowadays, distractions seem infinite with the ever-evolving digital landscape and social media platforms constantly developing endless scrolling functionalities. I believe this has significantly impacted not only people’s ability to focus deeply and avoid distractions but also the average attention span. So, how do we eliminate these distractions to focus on the things that truly matter and provide value, whether that be work, personal projects, or productive habits like reading or exercise?

As someone who has worked from home since the announcement of the pandemic in March 2020, I have been in an environment where I could easily fall victim to an endless number of distractions. While I have always been someone who has really enjoyed the WFH lifestyle and feel much more productive in this setting, I have also adapted some productivity habits that have really helped me stay focused and make the most of each day. Here are some of these daily habits:

  • Waking up early: For someone like me, who is naturally a morning person, this one is not difficult. Despite this, I have noticed that habitually waking up early is just a great start to each day for me. While I use to use an alarm clock, my body has naturally adapted to waking up at the same time every day, which is right around 7AM.
  • Limiting phone time (especially in the morning): This one did NOT come naturally for me… It is such an easy thing to wake up and jump right on your phone and delve into the cyber world to watch funny videos or your favorite creator. In my experience, avoiding phone time, particularly right when I wake up for about an hour and before bed, has always shown to be so beneficial and refreshing. In addition to these time frames, throughout the day while working or even on weekends, I really limit the amount of time I am on my phone to avoid these distractions. Of course I will reply to a text or answer my brothers or friends in our group chats, but mainly just avoid the social scrolling.
  • Journaling / To-Do Lists: While having some sort of to-do list is super common for many of us, journaling something I would say is less common. Whether it is the start of the week or start of the day, I am habitually writing out to-do lists and routinely checking back on them to check things off when I complete them. Something I have noticed as well is that actually writing these to-do lists is MUCH more beneficial for me to actually complete them.  As for the journaling, I keep two different types of journals, one is a personal journal where I randomly write down thoughts, quotes, ideas, do vacation journals so I remember the trip better, etc, the other one is something I picked up this year, which is a guided daily journal that is really simple to fill out and has been a great daily habit and fun to look back on each days entries as well.
  • Pomodoro Method: This is something I actually learned about from my brother Isaiah and has really helped me in my workdays. The Pomodoro method really hones in on setting an actual timer for 25-45 times to do a deep focus work period, then taking a short break, repeating this cycle, and then taking a larger 15-20 minute break after 4 cycles. Here are also some general guidelines for this method as well:
    • Break Down Complex Projects
    • Small Tasks Go Together
    • Once a Pomodoro is set, it must ring
  • Get Some Sunlight/Exercise Daily: This is something that is non-negotiable for me. I have found that getting some sunlight (especially in the morning) is such a fantastic way to start the day. Ideally for me, this would involve a morning walk to wake myself up and reset my circadian rhythm for the day. I do understand that some people live in cold places and this is not always accessible, so I would just do the best you can and even just stepping outside for some fresh air and hopefully some sunlight as well will do wonders. In addition to the sunlight, I am someone who loves to exercise and break a sweat every single day, whether this be through a long walk, a good workout, or playing tennis or basketball, doing this daily has made me feel much better physically.
  • Utilize Productivity Apps: There are a plethora of different productivity apps and software out there, many of them being free as well, but 2 that I have found to be the most useful in my day-to-day have been ToDoist and Habit.

In the face of constant distractions, maintaining focus and productivity is an ongoing journey. By implementing mindful habits such as early rising, limited phone usage, journaling, Pomodoro sessions, and prioritizing outdoor time/physical activity, we can reclaim control over our attention and achieve meaningful progress in both work and life.

How to Stay on Top of Google Algorithm Updates for SEO Success

In the dynamic world of SEO, staying on top of Google’s algorithm updates is crucial for maintaining visibility and relevance in search engine results. With Google constantly refining its algorithms to deliver the best possible user experience, SEO professionals and website owners need to adapt their strategies accordingly. Here are some key tips on how to navigate the waves of algorithm updates and stay ahead of the curve:

Stay Informed

Make it a priority to stay informed about the latest developments in the world of SEO and Google algorithm updates. Follow reputable SEO blogs, subscribe to industry newsletters, and attend webinars or conferences to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and changes. Websites like Search Engine Land, Moz, and Search Engine Journal regularly provide insights into algorithm updates and their potential impacts on search rankings.

Monitor Performance Metrics Consistently

Keep a close eye on your website’s performance metrics, such as organic traffic, keyword rankings, and conversion rates. When Google rolls out an algorithm update, monitor any fluctuations in these metrics closely to identify any potential impacts on your site’s visibility and user engagement. Tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and third-party SEO platforms can help you track and analyze these metrics effectively.

Focus on Quality Content

Google’s algorithm updates often prioritize high-quality, relevant content that meets the needs of users. Focus on creating valuable, informative content that addresses common search queries and provides actionable insights. Conduct keyword research to identify topics of interest to your target audience and optimize your content accordingly. Regularly update and refresh your content to ensure its accuracy and relevance over time. It is also vital to align your content with Google’s EEAT guidelines. This is crucial to ensuring that your websites content is positioned high in search results.

Build/Maintain a Strong Backlink Profile

Backlinks continue to play a significant role in SEO, as they signal to search engines the authority and relevance of your website. However, not all backlinks are created equal, and low-quality or spammy links can harm your site’s rankings. Focus on building a diverse, natural backlink profile from reputable sources within your industry. Monitor your backlink profile regularly and disavow any toxic or irrelevant links that could negatively impact your site’s SEO.

Adapt and Evolve

SEO is an ever-evolving field, and what works today may not necessarily work tomorrow. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation, and be prepared to adjust your SEO strategies in response to Google algorithm updates and changing industry trends. Experiment with new techniques, test different approaches, and be willing to pivot your strategy based on data-driven insights and best practices.

Are You Ready for the Next Algo Update?

In conclusion, staying on top of Google algorithm updates requires vigilance, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, user-focused experiences. By staying informed, monitoring performance metrics, focusing on quality content and backlinks, and embracing a mindset of continuous learning, SEO professionals and website owners can navigate the waves of algorithm updates and maintain their competitive edge in the ever-changing landscape of search engine optimization.

Top 3 Parks for Walking in the Raleigh, NC Area

What are the Best Parks to Walk in Raleigh?

While all of these places listed will be completely biased and strictly my own opinion, after living in Raleigh for some time and trying out a variety of different parks, this list contains the parks that I enjoyed the most above all.

1. Fred G. Bond Park (Cary, NC)

The first time I went to this park I instantly fell in love. The drive in separates you from civilization and urban sprawl to being surrounded by wilderness and beauty. It has a beautiful lake in the center, which you can see from many of the walking trails. There is a nice boathouse that sells snacks and has rentals for kayaks and canoes during the warm months of the year. I am not quite sure what it is, but Fred G. has just always been my favorite park to go and walk and clear my head whenever needed. Coming here in the Fall when the leaves are changing is surreal and looks like something out of a movie. There is also a yearly race here, which I have done myself with my partner, which was awesome.

Tips For Improving Your Personal Finances

Managing finances is such a critical component in life. Its a life skill that is not really taught in the public school system and is something you almost have to go out and learn on your own if not taught by your parents as you grow up. Most Americans do not have their finances in control, with recent data showing that the average American has $90,460 in debt. This includes all types of consumer debit, credit cards, mortgages, car loans, student loans, etc… What is even crazier to hear is that at the start of 2022, 64% of Americans were living paycheck to paycheck.

Many people in the US struggle deeply to properly manage their finances. What is odd about this is that it is not that difficult to stay on top of. Managing your finances is not aligned with making more money either. This is a common misconception that many people use to cope with not really putting the time into getting their money organized. When it really comes down to it, there are a few easy ways for people to start getting on top of their financial situation.

1. Creating a Budget and Sticking to it

This is the big kahuna as they say. Creating a realistic budget and doing your absolute best to stick to it is so vital for being financial free. So many people struggle with not creating a budget, but making an effort to stick to it as well. When creating a budget, you should list out all the essential bills you have to pay in order to live – rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, phone, groceries, saving, and investments. Writing out a detailed budget and making an effort to sticking to it is the first step in becoming financially free.

2. Tracking All Expenses

Documenting all your expenses (EVERYTHING YOU SPEND DOWN TO THE PENNY) is essential in improving your financial situation. This will broaden your lens on exactly where your money is going and all the money you are wasting on things you should not be spending on. Without properly tracking your spending, its an out of side out of mind type of deal, where you really will not have a grip on where your money is going. You will just see your account get smaller and any credit card bills getting higher. There are great tools available for this to be an automated process like Mint, rather then the old school pen and paper or Excel/Google Sheet.

3. Tackle Your Debts

The earlier you tackle your debts the better. There is a wide variety of advice out there on eliminating your debt. Most of them will say the same things. DO YOUR ABSOLUTE BEST TO STAY OUT OF DEBT! Do what you can to pay off your debts as soon as possible. The best way to do this is by minimizing your spending and throwing the excess at your debts. It is incredibly easy to rack up a ton of consumer debt because credit cards and loans are handed out like candy these days. The earlier you pay off the debts, the closer you will be to financial success.

4. Build an Emergency Fund

You can start small and set goals for yourself like saving $100, $250, $500, $1000, and so on until you can save about 6 months of living expenses. This will provide a financial buffer for you to rely on in times of emergency – losing a job or needing an emergency root canal. You should then start to automate savings to whatever you feel comfortable contributing, like every paycheck saving a certain amount, lets say $100 or $500. Everyone’s incomes will fluctuate so just contribute what you can even if it is not that much. Anything will help.

5. Develop an Investment Strategy

There is a reason in every single piece of investment literature you can find that it will state somewhere the earlier you start investing the better. There is no such thing as being to young to start investing your money. Developing some well-rounded investment vehicles will payoff when you are older and no longer work and have an income. Prior to developing a good investment strategy, it is key to follow the step above and build your emergency fund first.

A great way to invest your money is through an IRA account (Investment Retirement Account). They are simple to open and utilize and can even be automated. Some of the platforms I would recommend utilizing for an IRA are Vanguard, Fidelity, or Charles Schwab, my personal favorite and platform I use myself is Vanguard. But most of the bigger name brokerages are all good and will offer the same types of services and quality of customer experience. An IRA will allow you to invest your money with excellent tax break benefits. IRA’s are limited in the amount of money you are able to contribute to them each year, with the cap amount being $6,000. If this does not show you that they are incredible investment tools, then I don’t know what else to tell you. Once you setup an IRA, you can choose to invest your money in a wide variety of different funds – individual stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, etc… While mutual funds are going to be the most well-rounded investments in terms of their diversity, they typically require a minimum investment to start with, typically over $1,000. A great way to utilize an IRA is through automatic deposits. You can automate deposits into your account and choose which funds you want to put your money into. If you can, max out your IRA every year. If you can’t, then contribute as much as you possibly can each month.

Another amazing investment are 401k’s. If your company offers a 401k, use it! Especially if your company matches your contribution. It is a great way to automate an investment while also essentially getting contributions from your company which will increase your investment total even more. Contribute what you feel comfortable doing, but if possible make sure it aligns with the limit for your employer to match.

6. Cut Back Your Spending

This should be pretty obvious. But to so many it will not be. Eliminating any excess in your spending on non-essentials will be huge for improving your financial status. This will go hand in hand with tracking all of your expenses. You will be able to see all the stupid things you are spending your money on. No you don’t need the latest iPhone or the newest car or that designer shirt. Trim whatever you can and do your absolute best to cut where you can without diminishing your quality of life. Not eating out is another huge one. Purchasing groceries, especially in bulk and cooking your meals at home will cut your spending a ton. Making anything you can at home will almost always be cheaper. Remove any subscriptions you are not fully utilizing. Stop going on trips you cannot afford. The list goes on and on. Cutting back your spending will open up huge opportunities for you financially.

7. Increase/Diversify Your Income

It is easy to say “just make more money”. Well yeah that is not always easy. Do your best to increase your income either by looking for new job opportunities, negotiating your compensation at your current company, or doing freelance work. Using any skills you have to bring in extra income will help you in many areas of your financial status. If your company offers overtime, use every second you can. If you have a creative or freelance skillset that is in high demand you can utilize platforms like Fiverr or UpWork to find some freelance gigs. Or even through your own network, word of mouth can be huge for freelance or consulting gigs. Diversifying your income sources is a major way of getting to a better place financially.
